Dear Administrator Jackson,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I strongly urge the EPA to reject General Electric’s recent request to allow the company the option of walking away from a full clean-up of the toxic PCBs it dumped into the Hudson River for 30 years. The EPA must hold the company’s feet to the fire and ensure that GE completes the full clean-up plan defined by the agency’s historic 2002 Record of Decision.

A panel of independent scientific experts has determined that Phase 2 of the clean-up can and should move forward next year, with built-in opportunities to fine-tune the project as more and better information becomes available from ongoing monitoring efforts. The panel’s report provides no basis for GE’s request to postpone a decision, after only one more year of dredging, on whether it will complete this critical clean-up.

I encourage the EPA to reject GE’s latest pleas for more delay, and to demand that GE commit to finishing Phase 2 NOW. The EPA must re-affirm that, no matter how the company responds, you will hold GE accountable for cleaning up its toxic mess and will ensure that the project resumes next spring and continues until the job is done.

cc: Jeffrey Immelt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Electric Corporation

Ridiculous that they think they can just walk away. My kids deserve to play near a clean river.

I grew up on the Hudson and it breaks my heart to see it still so poisoned. Enough is enough.

GE made billions off that river and they need to clean up their own trash. Stop letting them off the hook!
